Rigor from the Get-Go! Online instruction to Prepare English Learners for the Demands of Today’s World
Feedback form is now closed.

In today’s world, becoming a proficient user of a language requires effective communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and strategies for understanding complex informational texts. How can teachers address those needs in the online/virtual environment? In this session, we explore the complexity of the everyday and academic tasks learners need to engage with in today’s world and then experience how to address these in online/virtual English language instruction. We see how teachers can scaffold learning, address academic language, promote collaborations, and prompt higher-order thinking through purposeful online tasks. We explore the importance of classroom tasks that are aligned to learning outcomes, provide meaningful applications of learning, and assess learner achievement. Audience members participate in demonstrations and then practice applying the practices to content they teach in their own online/virtual classrooms.
